ROUND 2 RECAP
The Senior Men’s teams took on Woodville in the second round of Premier cricket. The 1st Grade failed to make enough runs batting first on a flat Price Memorial wicket. Ty Watson top scored with 56 off 77 balls with too many other top order batsman getting a start but not accumulating a high score. Woodville passed Sturt’s total of 214 three wickets down.
The 2nd Grade continued their fine start to the season with a 6 wicket victory over Woodville. Woodville batting first were dismissed for 109 in the 36th over. Charlie Morgan was the chief destroyer with 4 wickets and Charlie Parker took 3 for 24 off 10 overs. Another strong bowling and fielding performance by the 2nd Grade team. Sturt passed the target 4 wickets down in the 30th over with Benno Schlicker top scoring with 33, Euan Woods 30 and Max Schlicker 28 not out.
Unley Oval was looking immaculate on Saturday when the Sturt 3rd Grade lost the toss to Woodville and were asked to field. The strong bowling lineup restricted Woodville to 107 off their 40 overs. Darius Wyatt and Hamish Allan coincidentally had the outstanding figures of 8 overs, 4 maidens, 4 wickets for 10. Nathan Van Eekeren took one wicket and Angus Lewis and James Hillis bowled tightly. Sturt reached Woodville’s total in 22 overs with Nick Cook top scoring with 60 not out and Alex Durbridge continuing his good form with 32 not out.
The highlight of the round was the 4th Grade’s win ensuring Sturt secured 3 out of 4 wins against Woodville. Woodville batting first set Sturt a target of 141 with 9 wickets down. The wickets were shared around the Sturt bowlers with Andrew Frangoulis the pick of the bowlers with the figures 7 overs, 2 maidens, 2 wickets for 20. The run chase for Sturt was not easy, losing 4 wickets with only 52 runs on the board. The run rate required hovered around 4 runs an over for the rest of the innings. The best partnership of the innings was 44 between Daljeet Singh and Will Faulkner. Daljeet was dismissed for a well compiled 36 and Will remained not out on 45 off 63 balls. Will’s knock was a very mature innings and a match winning contribution.
The L02’s second game for the season was against Reynella at Mitchell Oval. With a completely different team from the first week, the team comprised a couple of father/son combinations, Craig and Jared Merritt and Rob and Tom Young donning the whites. Reynella batted first and were 6 for 172 after 40 overs with their opener unluckily dismissed for 99! The Sturt team overtook the Reynella total 6 wickets down after 35 overs. Ryan Challis top scored with 65, Nick Stuart looked like he had not lost any touch with a well compiled 30 and Ryan Middleton was 32 not out at the end of the innings.
The Women’s 1st Grade played a Twenty/20 against a strong Northern Districts team at Price Memorial. Northerns batted first and set Sturt a total of 5 for 122 after 20 overs. The wickets were shared around with Sarah Carver with the best figures of 1 for 15 off 4 overs. Eliza Bartlett and Dani Ransley opened the innings and were in full control of the run chase until Eliza was dismissed for 21 with the score on 86. Danni was dismissed shortly after Eliza making 50 off 38 balls with 6 fours. Alex Price and Emma de Broughe compiled a 38 run partnership to steer the Sturt side home to victory. Emma and Alex were both 15 not out at stumps.
