ROUND 1 RECAP

Mens 1st grade captain Brad Davis with the Phillips/Freeman cup.

The first round of Senior Men’s cricket produced a “bluewash”, 5 wins, a great start to the season. However, one swallow doesn’t make a summer remembering we had a “bluewash” first round last season against Northern Districts. The 1st Grade batted first at Port Reserve and made an impressive 243 all out. Brad Davis top scored with 79 and Ty Watson was not out on 47. Uly van Duyker’s first game with the club was impressive, opening the bowling and producing a tight 9 over spell conceding only 16 runs. Kosta Sinodinos also making his first grade debut bowled well taking 2/40 off 10 overs. Ziggy Kulesza bowled magnificently taking 5 for 33. Stuart Claring-Bould looked like he had returned to his old form with 1/15 off 7 overs. Congratulations to Thomas Kelly making his 1st Grade debut.

In a high standard match the 2nd Grade ground out a win at Price Memorial. Batting first the home team made 218 all out with one over left to face. Max Schlicker produced a great captain’s knock making 87 off 94 balls. Max Schlicker and Corey Kelly (34 off 45 balls) had a 80 run partnership that set up the innings. Euan Woods our English visitor impressed with 28 runs and 2 for 41 off 10 overs. Charlie Morgan (3 for 28), Fraser Durham (3 for 25) and Ed Verco (1 for 37) bowled excellent line and length all day and set up the win for Sturt. Port were 9 for 182 after their 50 overs. An excellent win by the 2nd Grade team against one of the better 2nd Grade bowling attacks.

3rd Grade had an easy victory scoring 6 for 264 off 40 overs with Brodie Whitbourne and Alex Durbridge putting on a 192 run partnership for the third wicket. Brodie making 87 and Alex 96. An outstanding effort. Scott Madden making his Senior debut contributed 24 not out at the end of the innings. Port were dismissed 9 down for 63. Hamish Allan starred with the ball taking 4 for 10 off 6 overs.

The 4th Grade team had a great victory against a Port team that beat them outright last season. Batting first Sturt made 185 with Mitch Thiele top scoring with 40. Parth Suri opened the innings and made a well compiled 29 considering he batted in the most difficult conditions for the day. Sam Bennetts was 21 not out and Hanno Jacobs hit 24 off 10 balls at the end of the innings. Port were 8 for 155 at the end of their 40 overs. Angus Parker took 3 for 32 off 8 overs, Hanno Jacobs 2 for 33 off 8 overs and Steve Ottanelli bowled well conceding only 22 runs off his 8 overs.

The return of the 5th team in the Adelaide Turf Cricket Association L02 competition was a success with the 5th team winning convincingly. Woodville Rechabites were torn apart by Darcy Burns. Darcy took 5 for 18 off 3.5 overs which included a hat trick. Well bowled Darcy! Sturt passed the 71 run target in 17 overs with Nick Cook top scoring with 34 not out.

The Women’s teams opened the season with a Twenty/20 fixture against Southern Districts. The 1st Grade team ventured to Bice Oval and easily accounted for Southern Districts. Annie O’Neill top scored with 50 over 43 balls and Eliza Bartlett was 22 not out at the end of the innings. Southerns were all out for 28 off 12 overs. Dani Ransley took 3 for 1 off 3 overs and the other wicket takers were spread evenly. A great team effort.

The 2nd Grade team were victorious over Southerns restricting them to 84 runs off the 20 overs. Sturt passed the total 2 down after 16 overs.

The Junior teams played the first day of a two day fixture against Glenelg. Their round will be completed next weekend.
